Session Topics
Saturday morning
Powerline Safety – Emera Maine – A 2-hour session; how to work safely around powerlines. (2 CEH)
Lightning Safety – NOAA John Jensenius – A 1-hour session; how to stay safe when lightning threatens.
Map & Compass Navigation – RMG Roger David – A 3-hour review of land navigation using a map &
compass; GPS will be covered as time allows. Bring compass and GPS.
Wilderness First Aid Review – John Tierney / Life Flight Maine – A 3-hour session covering common
wilderness medical emergencies. This is a review only and does not result in WFA certification. The Life Flight
helicopter may also be on site.
Saturday afternoon
Autism Awareness – RMG James Bridge – A 2-hour session about the characteristics of persons on the
Autism spectrum. (2CEH)
Safety-Trained Hunters/Trappers – Waldo County SAR – In this 1-hour session you will learn the basic
safety and survival instructions given to Maine hunters and trappers in their safety courses.
Basic Knots & Gear – Wilderness Rescue Team – A 1-hour session covering the basic techniques and gear
used by a rope rescue unit, as well as how you can make yourself useful to the team, and a few knots that you
may yourself find helpful.
Wild Edibles – RMG Gary Roberts – In this 1-hour session you will learn how to find and identify a selection of
local wild edibles.
Working with Horses – Maine Mounted SAR – In this 1-hour hands-on session you will learn how to help the
Mounted team, including how to behave around horses, and how to safely catch, lead, and tie up a horse. K-9
handlers will have the opportunity to introduce their dogs to the horses if time allows.
Sunday morning
K-9 Demonstration – Maine Search and Rescue Dogs – A 1-hour demonstration of the various capabilities of
the SAR K-9.
Litter packaging and handling
Steve Hudson of MDISAR will demonstrate liter packaging and handling. Bring your equipment to practice with
and get pointers.
Mobile Command Post – York County EMA – The York County EMA mobile command post will be available
for self-touring all day, and there will be a 1-hour official info session as well.
Wide area sweep/Hasty search Jen Sinsabaugh WRT will demonstrate a faster method of covering a grid
that is useful when conditions warrant.
